Über riesige Spiegel wird das Sonnenlicht gebündelt und mit dessen Hilfe Spezialöl erhitzt. Die so gewonnene Wärme wird in Wasserdampf umgewandelt, der Turbinen antreibt. Ein Teil der Sonnenwärme könnte darüber hinaus tagsüber in speziellen Wärmespeichern gesammelt und nachts oder in Zeiten von Bedarfsspitzen an den Wärmekreislauf abgegeben werden.

Man rechnet damit, dass etwa 15 Prozent des europäischen Strombedarfes abgedeckt werden könnten. Transportiert würde der Strom über ein Netz moderner Hochspannungsleitungen, die jedoch erst noch gebaut werden müssten. Um den Energieverlust so gering wie möglich zu halten, müsste der Strom als Gleichstrom und nicht als Wechselstrom in die Leitungen eingespeist werden. Technisch wäre das kein Problem. Gleichstromleitungen gibt es bereits dort, wo große Strommengen etwa aus abgelegenen Regionen in Ballungszentren geleitet werden müssen. Die Gleichstromleitungen haben noch weitere Vorteile, ihre Kabel sind billiger und ihre Trassen beanspruchen weitaus weniger Platz als die der Wechselstromnetze.
